Can I Replace Only the Compressor or Do I Need a Whole New Air Conditioner?

Home air conditioners keep millions of families cool and comfortable. As these systems work great year in and year out, you may need an AC repair at some point. While various things can go wrong with your AC unit, a broken compressor is a leading problem for many homeowners.

After you’ve learned that your AC compressor is no longer working, you may be wondering what to do next. Luckily, we’re here to help.

Keep reading to learn about the options you have when experiencing this issue, including what factors to consider.

Can you replace just the outside AC unit?

While you may think you can simply buy a new AC compressor, that isn’t always the best option. Another tactic is to replace the entire outdoor unit. Called the condensing unit, replacing this equipment can solve the problem right away. However, you should only choose this option if one or more of these statements is true:

  • The AC compressor is still under warranty
  • You’re currently low on money
  • No other major problems are happening with your unit
  • The inside unit was replaced recently

If any of the above is correct, then the best option would be to replace the entire outdoor unit. Wondering if you can just get a new AC compressor instead? Keep reading to find out.

When to replace home AC compressor

On some occasions, you can simply buy a new AC compressor. However, there aren’t many circumstances where this is the best option. We only recommend replacing the AC compressor if it’s still under warranty. If it isn’t, replacing this equipment could cost you a lot of money. If your AC compressor is no longer under warranty, take a look at the other options you have.

Replacing condensing unit and indoor coil

Sometimes the smart move is to replace both your condensing unit and indoor coil. While it’s more cost-effective to only replace the outdoor unit, your system won’t work as effectively with an old indoor coil. Only replacing the outdoor unit is like only replacing the engine in your vehicle. While your system will still function, it won’t work as well as it should. That said, to reap the many benefits of a new condensing unit, it’s important to also buy a new indoor coil. If you replace both, you can experience the following advantages:

Greater energy efficiency

When you combine new equipment with older equipment, your system won’t work as effectively. Buying both a new condensing unit and a new indoor coil can lead to increased energy efficiency.

Lower installation costs

When you replace this equipment on two separate occasions, you’ll have to pay twice for installation. But when replacing both of these system components during one appointment, you’ll only be charged one installation fee.

New Warranty

If you only replace one part of your system, most manufacturers won’t give you a warranty. However, as long as all system parts are replaced, several manufacturers will grant a warranty.

While replacing compressor on AC unit might solve the issue, sometimes it isn’t the right decision. Before choosing, read this blog to ensure you’re making the right choice.
